Cold steel originally several smaller towns and one small city in Iron County, Utah USA. Long ago in its history it was operated as one of the few iron mines in the old USA, that was later stopped when better mines opened. Almost a hundred years later the government knew in the coming storm that they would lose resource capable areas so they ordered the mines reopened.
The area was secured by US military personnel during the first stages of the Final War. The 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division was assigned this location to wait for orders. They were not allowed to participate in the fighting and the unit lost communication with their command very early into the war, so they obeyed their orders, bunkered down and wondered what happened outside.
That was almost 100+ years ago. The population of the city and towns had fled or joined with the marine units. The combined area now tends to avoid the actual city of Cedar City due to an outbreak in the town, but they maintained the remaining small towns around it.
The area has now been renamed the town of Cold Steel (named after the nickname of the Marine unit), still using the iron mines to build up resources. The town lives on subsistence farming, hunting and a small bit of trade with the iron mine output. As far as the rest of the world it is a sleepy little town eeking out an existence.
The area is fortunate in its location. The radiation, nanite and bioweapons have not had fallout over the area due to the mountains, wind pattern and some believe because of the location of the iron ore itself. Mutations are extremely low occurrence, and most outside forces have not noticed this location.
The reality of the situation is that the town still considers itself part of the Old US military. All townsfolk are expected to serve four years “active duty” before mustering out (they can choose to stay in if they prefer). All of this is done out of the light of outsiders.
